Finally there is the question of making public

the decision to make a further £250,000 in addition

to that promised in the Hong Kong Financial Settlement

available to the University for capital works. You

will no doubt appreciate that, quite apart from the

desirability of maintaining interest and pride in

the University in Hong Kong (with a view

incidentally to obtaining funds from private sources

to assist the University), such an announcement would

have a very considerable political significance,

particularly at the present time, as a further

proof of His Majesty's Government's oft-stated

intention of remaining in Hong Kong.
